How the Vidhi Commonly Differs
Ganapathi Homam is one of the most common rituals in Malayali homes, usually performed in the early morning before a housewarming, a new venture or a journey. The offerings commonly include coconut, jaggery, rice flakes and ghee, and the homam is closely associated with a smooth start.
The nilavilakku, a tall brass lamp, is lit in many homes every evening and placed at the centre of pujas and ceremonies. At Griha Pravesham, often called Palukachal, the family commonly enters with a lit nilavilakku, and milk is boiled in the new kitchen.
Kerala has its own Tantric and Vedic lineages, and customs differ between communities and regions. Some rituals, such as Bhagavathi Seva, are specific to Kerala. Families who want a close match to their tradition should share their community and any specific practices when booking.
