What is Ayushya Homam?
Ayushya Homam is a Vedic homam dedicated to Ayur Devata, the deity associated with lifespan (ayus). It is especially common in South Indian households, where it is traditionally performed on a child's first birthday and on birthdays reckoned by janma nakshatra, the lunar star under which a person was born.
The ritual usually begins with Ganapati Puja, punyahavachanam (purification) and kalash sthapana, followed by offerings into the holy fire with Ayush Suktam and related Vedic mantras. Depending on family custom, prayers to the Navagrahas, Mrityunjaya mantras or Dhanvantari may also be included.
The homam is a way for families to pray for the well-being of a loved one, whether a newborn, an elder or anyone marking a milestone. It is a devotional practice and not a substitute for medical care. Vidhis vary between regions and families, and the Pandit will follow your tradition.
Significance
In the Vedic view, agni (fire) is the messenger that carries offerings to the devatas. Ayushya Homam uses this ancient form of worship to invoke Ayur Devata, with ghee, samidha (holy wood) and other offerings made while chanting mantras for long life and vitality.
Many families treat it as a samskara-like observance for children, particularly on the first birthday, and later as a way of giving thanks for another year of life. Devotees associate the homam with protection, good health and a sense of blessing around the person for whom it is performed.

How Ayushya Homam is performed
- 1Ganapati Puja and sankalpThe homam begins with worship of Ganapati and a sankalp in the name of the person, with their gotra, nakshatra and rashi.
- 2PunyahavachanamPurification of the space, the participants and the ritual items with water sanctified by Vedic mantras.
- 3Kalash sthapana and avahanA kalash is established and Ayur Devata is invoked into it, along with other deities as per the vidhi.
- 4Agni pratishthaThe holy fire is kindled in the homa kund with mantras and prepared for the offerings.
- 5Homam with Ayush SuktamGhee, samidha and other offerings are made into the fire while Ayush Suktam and related mantras are chanted, often a set number of times.
- 6PurnahutiThe final offering is made with a coconut or dry fruits, cloth and ghee to complete the homam.
- 7Kalash abhishek and blessingsWater from the kalash is sprinkled over the person, followed by aarti, akshata blessings from elders and distribution of prasad.
