What is Mahamrityunjaya Jaap?
Mahamrityunjaya Jaap is the repeated chanting of the Tryambakam mantra from the Rig Veda (7.59.12) and Yajurveda, addressed to Lord Shiva as the conqueror of death. It is performed as an anushthan: a sankalp is taken in the devotee's name, and one or more Pandits chant the mantra a fixed number of times, usually on a rudraksha mala, before concluding with a havan.
Common options include 11,000, 21,000, 51,000 and 1.25 lakh (125,000) chants. The number of Pandits determines the duration, a smaller count may be completed in a day or two, while 1.25 lakh chants are commonly completed over 5 to 11 days. Traditionally a havan with one-tenth of the jaap count as ahutis follows, though many families opt for a shorter havan.
Devotees traditionally undertake this jaap seeking inner strength, courage and wellbeing for themselves or a loved one, including during illness. It is a spiritual practice and should always go alongside, never instead of, proper medical care.
Significance
The mantra, Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat, asks Shiva, the three-eyed one, to release the devotee from bondage 'like a ripe cucumber from its vine', and to lead towards immortality. It is often called the Moksha mantra and is traditionally associated with sage Markandeya, whose devotion to Shiva is a celebrated Puranic story.
