Chowk is the old commercial heart of Varanasi, a dense network of lanes filled with wholesale markets, silk and sari shops, sweet shops and tall old houses. It lies in the old city between Godowlia and Maidagin, with the lanes towards Kashi Vishwanath close by.
Many trading families in Chowk have run their businesses and lived in the same houses for generations. Life here moves at the pace of old Kashi: busy, crowded and full of small shrines tucked into corners of the lanes.
