About the area
Durgakund takes its name from the historic Durga temple and the large water tank, or kund, beside it. The area sits in south Varanasi between Bhelupur and Lanka, along the road that leads towards the Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple, and it has long been one of the most devotional parts of Kashi.
Around the temple and kund are family homes, apartment buildings, guest houses, sweet shops and stalls selling flowers and puja items. Many families have lived here for generations, and visitors often stay nearby because of the easy road access to both BHU and the ghats.
Devotion to the Goddess shapes the rhythm of Durgakund. During both Navratris the area fills with devotees, and local families often arrange Durga Saptashati path, Navratri puja or a Chandi homam at home, sometimes with kanya pujan on Ashtami or Navami.
Beyond the festival season, households here book Satyanarayan Puja on Purnima, Hanuman puja or Sundarkand path on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and havans for birthdays and family milestones. Visiting families often plan a home or guest house puja and then take darshan on their own.
