Overview
What is Bhoomi Puja?
Bhoomi Puja is performed on a plot of land before construction starts. It honours Bhoomi Devi (Mother Earth), Vastu Purusha and the directional deities, seeking permission to dig into the land and asking forgiveness for any disturbance to the life it supports.
The ceremony is often combined with Shilanyas, the laying of the foundation stone. A pit is dug, usually in a direction suggested by tradition, and items such as a kalash, nine gems or metals, a silver naga, coins and grains are placed with the first brick or stone. The owner and family then break ground, often with a spade or pickaxe that has been worshipped.
It is performed for homes, commercial buildings, temples and even farmland. Details such as the direction of the first dig and the items placed in the foundation differ by region and family tradition, and the Pandit follows the custom you prefer.

Significance
In Hindu tradition the earth is revered as a mother. Before cutting into her surface to build, families traditionally seek her blessing and that of Vastu Purusha, whom the scriptures describe as residing beneath every site.
Bhoomi Puja also serves as a formal, shared beginning for a project that may take months or years. Family members, architects and builders often attend, and devotees associate the ritual with a smooth, obstacle-free course of construction.

How the puja is performed

Preparing the site
The plot is cleaned and the area for the puja and the first dig is marked, usually in a direction suggested by tradition.

Sankalp and Ganesh puja
The Pandit takes the sankalp in the owner's name with family details, then worships Lord Ganesha for an obstacle-free project.

Bhoomi Devi and Vastu puja
Mother Earth, Vastu Purusha, the Navagraha and the directional deities are worshipped with flowers, grains and offerings.

Naga and kalash puja
A small silver naga (serpent) and a kalash are worshipped; in many traditions these are placed in the foundation pit.

Breaking ground
The worshipped spade or pickaxe is used by the owner to make the first dig, often followed by other family members.

The kalash, coins, grains, gems or metals and the first brick or stone are placed in the pit with mantras.

Where space allows, a short havan is performed, followed by aarti and distribution of prasad to all present.
