Overview
What is Hanuman Puja?
Hanuman Puja is the worship of Lord Hanuman, the devoted servant of Shri Rama, revered for his strength, humility, courage and unwavering bhakti. He is also known as Bajrangbali, Pavanputra, Anjaneya and Sankat Mochan, the one who removes troubles.
The puja typically includes offerings of sindoor mixed with jasmine oil (chola), red flowers, a garland, and prasad such as boondi or besan laddoo, along with recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa, Bajrang Baan or Hanuman Ashtak. Many families also recite the Sundarkand as part of a longer observance.
Tuesdays and Saturdays are traditionally dedicated to Hanuman. Varanasi holds a special place in his worship through the Sankat Mochan temple, traditionally associated with Goswami Tulsidas. Family customs vary, and the Pandit will follow yours.

Significance
In the Ramayana, Hanuman crosses the ocean to find Sita, carries the mountain of herbs to revive Lakshmana and serves Rama with complete selflessness. He is regarded as chiranjeevi, one who is believed to remain on earth wherever Rama's name is sung.
Devotees associate Hanuman with fearlessness, discipline and protection from negative influences. Traditionally, his worship is also recommended during Shani sade sati, as Puranic stories describe Hanuman freeing Shani Dev.

How the puja is performed

Preparation
An idol or picture of Hanuman is placed on a red cloth, ideally alongside Shri Rama, with a ghee or mustard oil lamp.

Ganesh Pujan and sankalp
After Ganesh Pujan, the Pandit takes the sankalp with your name, gotra and intention.

Ram smaran
Shri Rama is remembered and worshipped first, as Hanuman's worship is traditionally considered complete only with Rama's name.

Chola and offerings
Sindoor mixed with jasmine oil is offered, along with red flowers, a garland, janeu, incense and lamp.

Chalisa and stotra path
The Hanuman Chalisa is recited, often 7, 11 or 108 times, along with Bajrang Baan, Hanuman Ashtak or Sankat Mochan stotra as per the chosen vidhi.

Naivedya
Boondi, besan laddoo, jaggery and roasted gram or bananas are offered as prasad.

The puja concludes with Aarti Kije Hanuman Lala Ki and distribution of prasad.
