Vahan (Vehicle) Puja

Vahan Puja is the blessing of a new vehicle before it is used regularly. It is a brief, practical ritual usually performed at home, outside a temple or at the dealership, beginning with Ganesh puja and often including a prayer to Lord Hanuman or the family deity.

The vehicle is marked with a swastik in roli or sindoor, garlanded with marigold and mango leaves, and a mauli thread is tied. A coconut is broken, and in many North Indian families lemons are placed under the wheels for the vehicle to roll over as it moves for the first time.

Customs vary by region, South Indian families may perform a simpler pooja with camphor and kumkum, while Vishwakarma Puja and Ayudha Puja are occasions when many people re-bless their vehicles. The Pandit follows the family's preferred custom.

A vehicle carries the family and, for many, their livelihood. Worshipping it before use reflects gratitude for the purchase and a prayer for safe, obstacle-free journeys. Lord Ganesha is invoked as the remover of obstacles, and Hanuman is widely revered as a protector of travellers.

The ritual also reflects the broader Hindu tradition of honouring tools and means of work, seen in festivals like Vishwakarma Puja and Ayudha Puja. Devotees associate the puja with an auspicious beginning and mindfulness on the road, which, of course, always goes hand in hand with safe driving.
