Overview
Tripindi Shraddha is a specialised ancestral rite in which three pindas are offered, traditionally for ancestors of past generations whose Shraddha may not have been performed regularly, or whose rites the family is unsure about. It is described in traditional texts and practised in several communities.
Because it is a specialised rite, families usually decide on Tripindi Shraddha with guidance from their family priest or a knowledgeable Pandit. Practices differ considerably by tradition, including the deities invoked, the materials used and the place where it is performed.
In Varanasi, the rite is performed at a suitable place near the Ganga with experienced Pandits. We explain the vidhi clearly beforehand so that the family knows what to expect and can make an informed decision.
ॐ पितृभ्यः स्वधायिभ्यः स्वधा नमः॥
Oṁ pitṛbhyaḥ svadhāyibhyaḥ svadhā namaḥ.
In the Tripindi vidhi, the three pindas are commonly associated with Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, and are traditionally offered for ancestors across three generations whose rites may have been missed. The rite is believed to bring peace to such ancestors and to fulfil the family’s duty towards them.
Families often consider Tripindi Shraddha when regular annual Shraddha has not been possible for many years, or when their priest suggests it. It is not a rite to approach with fear, rather, a sincere act of remembrance for ancestors who may have been forgotten.

The Pandit understands the family’s situation and tradition, and explains whether and how Tripindi Shraddha is usually performed.
The performer purifies and takes a sankalp with the family’s names and gotra.
Prayers are offered to Lord Ganesha and Lord Vishnu at the start of the rite.
The deities associated with the three pindas are invoked with mantras.
Three pindas, prepared from different grains as per the vidhi, are offered with sesame, water and flowers.
Tarpan is offered to the ancestors, and a havan is performed where part of the tradition.
Daan is offered as per custom, and the rite concludes with prayers for the ancestors’ peace.
