Delhi

What is Satyanarayan Puja?

A beloved household puja to Lord Vishnu as Satyanarayan, with the five-chapter Satyanarayan Katha, commonly held on Purnima or after a happy milestone.

Delhi families book the katha on Purnima, after a wedding, on a birthday, after a new job or simply because the elders feel it is time. A Pandit from PujaKarma arrives with the katha book, sets up the chowki with the banana leaves and kalash, and reads the katha with an explanation the whole family can follow.

Why Families Choose Delhi for Satyanarayan Puja

In Delhi the Satyanarayan Katha is often the reason the whole family gathers. In joint family homes of Old Rajinder Nagar, Patel Nagar and Karol Bagh, the katha may be held every Purnima in the drawing room, with neighbours dropping in for prasad and aarti. In newer flats in Dwarka or Rohini, it is often the first puja after shifting.

Families from Purvanchal and UP often follow the katha with a havan and a meal, while many Punjabi homes keep it simpler with aarti and panjiri. Some families also book it on a Sunday rather than on the tithi, to suit office schedules. The Pandit will guide what fits.

Local Traditions & Timing

  • Purnima evenings, especially Kartik Purnima, see heavy demand, so book a few days ahead.
  • Weekend kathas are popular in Delhi due to office schedules; confirm the time early.
  • If a havan follows the katha, check your society's rules on smoke.
  • Evening traffic on routes like Outer Ring Road and NH 48 can delay arrival, so keep a buffer.

Where It's Performed & Planning Tips

Where it's performed

  • Joint family homes in Karol Bagh, Patel Nagar and Rajinder Nagar
  • Society flats in Dwarka, Rohini and Vasant Kunj
  • Community halls and RWA parks for colony kathas
  • Offices and shops on an anniversary or after a good year

Planning tips

  • Keep banana leaves or stems, a wooden chowki and a kalash ready.
  • Prepare panchamrit and sheera or panjiri as per your family custom.
  • Decide whether you want a havan after the katha.
  • Invite family for aarti time so everyone hears the katha's last chapter.
  • Share whether you would like the katha in plain Hindi or with Sanskrit recitation.

  1. 1Mandap preparation. A chowki is set up and often decorated with banana stems and mango leaves. An image of Satyanarayan or Vishnu, a kalash and a shaligram (if kept) are placed on it.
  2. 2Ganesh Pujan and sankalp. Ganesha is worshipped first. The Pandit then takes the sankalp in the name of the host family with gotra and intention.
  3. 3Kalash, Navagraha and Panchlokpal pujan. As per the fuller vidhi, the kalash, Navagraha and guardian deities are invoked before the main worship.
  4. 4Satyanarayan Puja. Lord Satyanarayan is offered panchamrit snan, yellow vastra, chandan, tulsi, flowers, incense, lamp and naivedya.
  5. 5Satyanarayan Katha. The Pandit narrates the five chapters of the Vrat Katha while the family listens with folded hands, often holding a few grains of rice or flowers.
  6. 6Havan (optional). Some families include a short havan after the katha, depending on regional custom.
  7. 7Aarti and prasad. The family performs the Satyanarayan aarti, and prasad of sheera or panjiri, bananas, panchamrit and tulsi is distributed to all present.
