What is Mahamrityunjaya Jaap?

A sankalp-based chanting of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra by Pandits, commonly in counts like 11,000, 51,000 or 1.25 lakh, traditionally sought for strength and wellbeing.

In Delhi families book the jaap when someone is unwell, before surgery, on a birthday of an elder, or after a frightening event. The number of recitations is decided with the Pandit, from a smaller count done in a day to a large count shared by several Pandits over many days.

Why Families Choose Delhi for Mahamrityunjaya Jaap

With large hospitals such as AIIMS, Safdarjung and Sir Ganga Ram in the city, many families come to Delhi for treatment, sometimes from far away. Relatives often want the jaap done at home or at their rented place nearby while the patient is in care, and an online sankalp is possible for those who cannot leave the hospital.

Delhi families of every regional background turn to this mantra in hard times. Some prefer the jaap with a Rudrabhishek, others with a havan only. The Pandit will explain the options so the family can choose calmly.

  1. 1Choosing the count and sankalp. The family chooses the number of chants. The sankalp is taken with the name, gotra and intention for the person on whose behalf the jaap is done.
