What is Satyanarayan Puja?

A beloved household puja to Lord Vishnu as Satyanarayan, with the five-chapter Satyanarayan Katha, commonly held on Purnima or after a happy milestone.

In Mumbai it is the puja almost every community knows. It is held after a wedding, on moving into a new flat, after a new job, on a birthday or simply on a full moon evening, with neighbours from the building invited for the sheera or panjiri.

Why Families Choose Mumbai for Satyanarayan Puja

Marathi families in Dadar, Thane and Dombivli often hold a Satyanarayan Puja soon after a wedding, with the newly married couple performing it together. Gujarati families in Ghatkopar and Borivali, North Indian families in Kandivali, Mira Road and Nalasopara, and South Indian families in Matunga and Chembur all keep their own way of doing it, from the prasad to the language of the katha.

Many housing societies also hold a common Satyanarayan Puja in the society hall or compound, during Ganeshotsav, at the end of Shravan or for a building anniversary. With so many families in one building, it is often the one puja where the whole society comes together.

Local Traditions & Timing

  • The puja needs no large havan, so it suits small flats and buildings with strict fire alarm rules.
  • Purnima evenings and weekends get booked early, especially in Shravan and the wedding season.
  • For a society puja, check the hall booking, sound limits and the time the hall must be vacated.
  • Evening pujas in the western and central suburbs should allow for peak hour traffic and crowded trains.

Where It's Performed & Planning Tips

Where it's performed

  • Living rooms of flats in Dadar, Andheri, Ghatkopar and Thane
  • Society halls and clubhouses in Powai, Goregaon and Kharghar
  • Building compounds in older CHS colonies during Ganeshotsav or Shravan
  • Offices and shops in Andheri East, Lower Parel and Vashi

Planning tips

  • Tell the Pandit whether you want the katha read in Marathi, Hindi or Gujarati, so the right Pandit is sent.
  • Decide on the prasad in advance: sheera is common in Marathi homes, while many North Indian families prepare panjiri and panchamrit.
  • Keep a banana stem or leaves for the mandap if your family uses them; local markets usually stock them on Purnima.
  • If neighbours are invited, plan the aarti time so people can come after work.
  • Arrange a chowki, a red or yellow cloth and a kalash; the Pandit will share the rest of the list.

Satyanarayan Puja vidhi, step by step

  1. 1Mandap preparation. A chowki is set up and often decorated with banana stems and mango leaves. An image of Satyanarayan or Vishnu, a kalash and a shaligram (if kept) are placed on it.
  2. 2Ganesh Pujan and sankalp. Ganesha is worshipped first. The Pandit then takes the sankalp in the name of the host family with gotra and intention.
  3. 3Kalash, Navagraha and Panchlokpal pujan. As per the fuller vidhi, the kalash, Navagraha and guardian deities are invoked before the main worship.
  4. 4Satyanarayan Puja. Lord Satyanarayan is offered panchamrit snan, yellow vastra, chandan, tulsi, flowers, incense, lamp and naivedya.
  5. 5Satyanarayan Katha. The Pandit narrates the five chapters of the Vrat Katha while the family listens with folded hands, often holding a few grains of rice or flowers.
  6. 6Havan (optional). Some families include a short havan after the katha, depending on regional custom.
  7. 7Aarti and prasad. The family performs the Satyanarayan aarti, and prasad of sheera or panjiri, bananas, panchamrit and tulsi is distributed to all present.
