What is Mahamrityunjaya Jaap?

A sankalp-based chanting of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra by Pandits, commonly in counts like 11,000, 51,000 or 1.25 lakh, traditionally sought for strength and wellbeing.

The jaap can be done at home while the family carries on with daily life, or by Pandits on the family's behalf with a sankalp in the patient's name, which many families choose when a loved one is in hospital.

Procedure, samagri & what's included

Why Families Choose Mumbai for Mahamrityunjaya Jaap

Mumbai has some of the country's largest hospitals, and families come here from across India for treatment, often staying in rented rooms or with relatives near Parel, Byculla or Andheri. At such times, many want the jaap started quickly, without having to search for Pandits in a city they do not know.

For families settled in Mumbai, the jaap is also common for an elder's birthday, after an accident or surgery, or on astrological advice. Babulnath and the Shiva temples across the city remain places of prayer, while the jaap itself is usually done at home.

Local Traditions & Timing

  • Longer counts may need several Pandits over many days, so a quiet room in the flat that can be used daily helps.
  • The jaap itself makes no smoke; only the closing havan needs a check with society rules and fire alarms.
  • If the family is staying near a hospital in a small room, the jaap can be done elsewhere with a sankalp in the patient's name.
  • Monsoon travel can affect daily arrival times for multi-day jaap, so agree a start time with some margin.

Where It's Performed & Planning Tips

Where it's performed

  • Family homes in Dadar, Parel, Andheri and Thane
  • Flats in Borivali, Ghatkopar, Chembur and Vashi
  • A society hall for a larger count with several Pandits
  • Jaap on the family's behalf with an online sankalp

Planning tips

  • Decide the count with the Pandit, based on urgency and your family's custom.
  • Share the full name and gotra of the person for whom the jaap is done.
  • Ask whether the havan will be the full one tenth of the count or a shorter form.
  • Arrange a simple daily meal or refreshments for the Pandits if the jaap runs for days.
  • Keep a Shiva image or lingam, a diya and rudraksha mala, or ask for samagri included.
