Surya is the soul of the Navagraha, the visible source of light and life, associated in Jyotish with the self, vitality, confidence, leadership and one's relationship with father and authority. Surya Graha Shanti is a bright, uplifting ritual performed to honour him.
The vidhi typically includes Ganesh puja, sankalp, arghya to the rising sun from a copper vessel with red flowers and akshat, Surya puja on red cloth with wheat and jaggery, and jaap of the Surya beej mantra 'Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah'. A full anushthan commonly involves 7,000 recitations, and many families add Aditya Hridayam path.
Few places are as moving for Surya worship as the ghats of Varanasi at dawn, where devotees offer arghya to the sun rising over the Ganga. Pandits can perform this puja on the ghats or at your home, following your family's custom.
