What is Guru (Brihaspati) Graha Shanti?
Brihaspati, or Guru, is revered as the teacher of the devas and is associated in Jyotish with wisdom, dharma, learning, children, good counsel and prosperity. Among the grahas he is considered the great benefic, and his worship is a gentle, joyful ritual centred on gratitude and guidance.
Guru Graha Shanti typically includes Ganesh puja, sankalp, Brihaspati puja on yellow cloth with chana dal, turmeric and yellow flowers, and jaap of the Guru beej mantra 'Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah'. A full anushthan commonly involves 19,000 recitations, while shorter counts are also chosen.
Brihaspati is traditionally worshipped alongside Lord Vishnu, and many families also honour the banana plant, which is associated with Guru, on Thursdays. Your Pandit will follow your family's custom.
