Overview
Devi Bhagwat Katha is a recitation and discourse on the Devi Bhagavata Purana, which celebrates the Divine Mother as the supreme power. It is often held as a Navaah, a nine day programme that fits naturally with Navratri.
Each day includes Devi puja, the katha with bhajans and aarti. The programme may also include Durga Saptashati recitation, kanya puja and a concluding havan and bhandara, as the family wishes.
It can be organised at home, in a temple or in a community hall, with Pandits from Varanasi leading the puja and katha.

The Devi Bhagavata Purana is a central text of the Shakta tradition. Listening to it over nine days is regarded as a complete offering to the Goddess.
Holding the katha during Navratri joins the worship of the nine forms of Durga with the stories of the Devi's many manifestations.

The katha begins with Ganesh puja, kalash sthapana and a sankalp.
Each day the Goddess and the text are worshipped by the Pandit.
The kathavachak recites and explains the day's portion, with bhajans.
Kanya puja is often performed on Ashtami or Navami.
The programme ends with a havan, aarti and bhandara.
