What is Lalita Sahasranama Parayanam?

Lalita Sahasranama is a hymn of one thousand names of Goddess Lalita Tripurasundari, found in the Brahmanda Purana. Parayanam means devoted recitation, and the hymn is chanted in homes and temples across South India.

A typical parayanam includes Ganesh puja, sankalp, recitation of the Lalita Sahasranama, often with kumkum archana where kumkum is offered with each name, followed by Lalita Trishati or Ashtottaram where desired, naivedya and aarti.

Families arrange it on Fridays, during Navratri, on full moon days or as a regular group recitation. Many women's groups in Hyderabad hold collective parayanams, and our Pandits can lead them.

Significance

The Lalita Sahasranama is regarded as one of the most important hymns in the Shakta tradition. Each name describes a quality of the Divine Mother, and the recitation is seen as a complete form of Devi worship.

Kumkum archana with the thousand names is especially popular among women devotees, and the kumkum is later shared as prasad.
