What is Udak Shanti?
A Marathi household shanti in which Pandits chant the Udak Shanti mantras over a kalash of water, which is then sprinkled through the home and over the family.
It is a rite closely linked with Maharashtrian Brahmin households, often done before a thread ceremony or wedding, at a Griha Pravesh, on a sixtieth or seventy fifth birthday, or after an illness in the family.

Udak Shanti vidhi, step by step
- 1Ganesh puja and sankalp. The family takes the sankalp with their names, gotra and the occasion for the shanti.
- 2Punyahavachan. Mantras are recited to purify the place and the people taking part in the ritual.
- 3Kalash sthapana. A kalash of water with mango leaves and a coconut is installed and the devatas are invoked in it.
- 4Udak Shanti mantra path. The Pandits chant the Udak Shanti sequence of Vedic shanti mantras over the kalash, usually for one to two hours.
- 5Sprinkling of the water. The mantra water is sprinkled over the family members and through each room of the home.
- 6Aarti and blessings. The ritual closes with aarti, blessings from the Pandits and prasad.
