Overview
What is Ahoi Ashtami Puja?
Ahoi Ashtami falls on Kartik Krishna Ashtami, about eight days before Diwali and four days after Karva Chauth. It is widely observed in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, and by North Indian families in every city they have made home.
Mothers fast from sunrise and worship Ahoi Mata in the evening. An image of Ahoi Mata with the seven sons and a porcupine (syahu) is drawn on the wall or placed as a printed calendar, and a kalash of water is kept beside it. The fast is broken after offering arghya to the stars, or in some families to the moon.
The Pandit performs the sankalp, recites the Ahoi Mata katha, and guides mothers keeping the vrat for the first time. Many families also tie a syahu mala, a silver pendant string, which is worn by the mother until Diwali.
Significance of Ahoi Ashtami Puja

Ahoi Mata is worshipped as a protector of children. The vrat expresses a mother's love and prayer for her children's health, happiness and long life.
The katha teaches care for all living beings, as it tells of a mother who accidentally harmed the cubs of a porcupine and later sought forgiveness through devotion.

How the puja is performed, step by step.

Drawing or placing Ahoi Mata
Ahoi Mata with the syahu and seven sons is drawn on the wall with geru, or a printed image is placed, with a kalash of water beside it.

Sankalp
The Pandit takes the sankalp for the mother keeping the vrat, with the names of her children.

Puja and offerings
Roli, akshat, flowers and sweets are offered, along with puri, halwa or mathri as per family custom. The syahu mala is worshipped.

Ahoi Mata katha
The Pandit narrates the Ahoi Mata katha while the mother holds grains of wheat or rice in her hand.

Arghya to the stars
After sunset, arghya of water from the kalash is offered to the stars, and the mother breaks the fast.
