What is Navagraha Puja?

A traditional worship of all nine grahas together, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu, performed to seek balance, peace and blessings in the household.

Most Mumbai families book it on the advice of their family astrologer, during a Shani sade sati, a difficult dasha, before a major decision, or simply as a yearly graha shanti for the household.

Procedure, samagri & what's included

Why Families Choose Mumbai for Navagraha Puja

Astrology is part of everyday life for many Mumbai families, whether it is a Marathi jyotishi in Dadar, a Gujarati family astrologer in Ghatkopar or a Pandit from the family's village in Uttar Pradesh or Bihar consulted by phone. The advice often ends with a recommendation for Navagraha Shanti at home.

Many families also visit the Shani temple at Shingnapur or offer oil at a local Shani mandir on Saturdays. The home puja complements these visits and lets the whole family take part in the sankalp together.

Local Traditions & Timing

  • A Navagraha homam produces smoke, so check society rules and fire alarms; the puja can be done without a homam if needed.
  • Each graha has its own grain, cloth and colour; the Pandit will share the list, and markets in Dadar and Bhuleshwar stock most items.
  • Weekend mornings book quickly, so share your preferred date early.
  • In small flats, the nine graha seats can be arranged on a single large chowki.

Where It's Performed & Planning Tips

Where it's performed

  • Flats in Dadar, Ghatkopar, Andheri and Thane
  • Homes in Borivali, Mulund and Vashi
  • Society halls when a larger homam is planned
  • Online sankalp for family members living outside Mumbai

Planning tips

  • Share the horoscope or birth details so the Pandit can focus on the graha that needs attention.
  • Ask whether jaap for a specific graha should be added, which may take extra days.
  • Keep the nine grains, coloured cloths and flowers ready, or ask for samagri included.
  • Plan a day when the main person can sit through the full sankalp.
  • Ask the Pandit about any daan to be given after the puja.

Navagraha Puja vidhi, step by step

  1. 1Preparation and purification. The space is cleaned and the altar set up. The Pandit performs achaman and pavitrikaran to purify the participants and samagri.
  2. 2Ganesh puja and sankalp. Lord Ganesha is worshipped first. The Pandit then takes the sankalp with the names, gotra and, where relevant, birth details of the family members.
  3. 3Kalash sthapana. A kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut is established and Varuna and other devatas are invoked.
  4. 4Navagraha mandala sthapana. The nine grahas are installed on a mandala, each in its traditional position and colour, often using their associated grains.
  5. 5Individual graha puja and mantras. Each graha is offered flowers, akshat, its traditional grain and naivedya while its Vedic or beej mantra is recited.
  6. 6Navagraha homam (optional). If the family chooses, a homam is performed with samidha traditionally associated with each graha.
  7. 7Aarti and prarthana. Aarti is performed and the family offers a prayer for peace and well-being.
  8. 8Dakshina, daan and prasad. The puja concludes with dakshina, any daan the family wishes to make, and distribution of prasad.
