Mumbai

What is Shraddha?

The rite of remembering and honouring departed parents and ancestors with offerings, prayers and food, performed with faith (shraddha) on their tithi or in Pitru Paksha.

In Mumbai, families perform Shraddha at home in their flat, or at a tank or the seashore where they can offer tarpan in water.

Why Families Choose Mumbai for Shraddha

Banganga Tank at Walkeshwar is one of the oldest places of worship in the city, and many families go there during Pitru Paksha to offer tarpan. Others prefer the seashore or their own home, especially elders who cannot travel far.

Marathi families observe Mahalaya Shraddha in Bhadrapada and the kakasparsh custom of offering food to crows, which takes some planning in a high-rise flat. Gujarati, North Indian and South Indian families each follow their own order of offerings, and the Pandit adapts to your custom.

Local Traditions & Timing

  • Pitru Paksha falls at the end of the monsoon; carry rain gear if you plan rites at Banganga or the seashore.
  • Offering food to crows from a high floor can be done from a balcony or terrace; ask the Pandit about your custom.
  • If brahmin bhojan is part of your rite, plan the meal in advance.
  • Sarva Pitru Amavasya is the busiest day of Pitru Paksha, so book early.

Planning tips

  • Share the tithi of passing so the date can be confirmed for this year.

  • Ask the Pandit what food to prepare, as it differs by tradition.
  • Wear simple, clean clothes, often white, and fast or eat light before the rite as your family does.
  • If going to Banganga, plan an early start to avoid crowds.
