Mumbai
What is Lakshmi Puja?
Worship of Goddess Lakshmi, associated with prosperity and auspiciousness, most widely performed on Diwali evening and on Fridays.
In Mumbai the Diwali Lakshmi Pujan is often a household and business affair at once, with the family's account books, cash box or laptop placed before the Goddess alongside the kalash and coins.

Why Families Choose Mumbai for Lakshmi Puja
The Mahalaxmi temple by the sea at Breach Candy is one of the city's best loved shrines, and Lakshmi worship runs through every community here. Gujarati and Marwari families in Kalbadevi, Ghatkopar and Borivali keep Chopda Pujan with new account books at Diwali, while Marathi households observe Lakshmi Pujan on Amavasya and the Margashirsha Guruvar vrat in many homes.
North Indian families across the suburbs follow their own Diwali puja with Ganesh and Lakshmi, and South Indian families may observe Varalakshmi Vratam in Shravan. With so many traditions, Diwali evening is one of the busiest times of the year for Pandits in the city.

Local Traditions & Timing
- Diwali Lakshmi Pujan muhurat falls in the evening, the same window for every family, so book well before the festival.
- Evening traffic around markets like Dadar, Crawford Market and Zaveri Bazaar is heavy before Diwali; allow travel time for the Pandit.
- Diyas and camphor near curtains in small flats need care; keep the puja area clear and a bucket of water nearby.
- Many societies light up common areas at Diwali, so check the hall booking early if you plan a group puja.
