Why Families Choose Mumbai for Durga Saptashati Path

Navratri in Mumbai is many festivals at once. Gujarati families fill the city with garba and dandiya, Marathi homes perform Ghatasthapana and worship the Devi for nine days, Bengali families gather at Durga Puja pandals, and North Indian families keep the fast and kanya pujan. Durga Saptashati is part of the Navratri of many of these homes.

The Mahalaxmi temple at Breach Candy and the Mumba Devi temple, the goddess the city is named after, draw devotees through Navratri. Families who cannot spend hours in temple queues often bring the path home.

Local Traditions & Timing

  • Navratri is the busiest time for this path, so book before the festival begins.
  • A path with havan produces smoke; check society rules and fire alarms or ask for the path alone.
  • If you want the path daily for nine days, agree the daily timing with the Pandit around traffic and garba nights.
  • Monsoon can stretch into early Navratri in some years, so allow travel time.

Where It's Performed & Planning Tips

Where it's performed

  • Homes in Ghatkopar, Borivali, Dadar and Thane
  • Flats in Andheri, Powai and Chembur
  • Society halls for a group path during Navratri
  • Online sankalp for family outside Mumbai

Planning tips

  • Decide whether you need a single path, a daily path or a Chandi havan.
  • Set up the Devi's image, a kalash and a lamp in a clean corner before the Pandit arrives.
  • Keep red flowers, chunri, kumkum and fruits ready, or ask for samagri included.
  • Plan kanya pujan on Ashtami or Navami if it is part of your custom.
  • Ask the Pandit whether to keep an akhand diya through Navratri, and how to do so safely in a flat.
