Overview
What is Havan?
A havan, also called yagna or homa, is one of the oldest forms of Vedic worship. Offerings of ghee, samagri and grains are made into a consecrated fire while mantras are chanted, with Agni regarded as the messenger who carries prayers to the deities.
Families perform a havan for many reasons, a housewarming, a birthday or anniversary, the end of a path or jaap, the start of a new venture, or simply to bring a sense of purity and calm to the home. It is also a common concluding rite after pujas and anushthans.
A havan can be kept simple or expanded with additional mantras and deities. It can be performed at home, at a venue or with an online sankalp where the family joins by video.

Significance

The havan kund is placed in a suitable spot and the family is seated around it.

Purification with water is followed by the sankalp with names, gotra and purpose.

Lord Ganesha is invoked and the kalash established.

The fire is kindled with camphor and samidha while mantras are chanted.

Family members offer ghee and samagri into the fire with each 'svaha'.

A final offering, often with a coconut, completes the havan.
