Abids
Abids has been the commercial heart of Hyderabad for well over a century. Its streets are lined with jewellery stores, book and stationery shops, textile showrooms, banks and older office buildings, and the GPO and Sunday book market are landmarks known across the city.
Very few families actually live in Abids. Most of the buildings are given over to trade and offices, and the proprietors and staff travel in each morning from Kachiguda, Malakpet, Himayatnagar and further out. Rituals here are almost entirely about business.

Opening pujas are the most frequent request in Abids. A new shop, showroom, office or branch is usually begun with a Ganapati Homam followed by a Lakshmi Kubera Homam, held before the shutters go up so that customers are not kept waiting outside.
Established businesses hold an annual puja on the founding date, a Lakshmi puja with the account books at Diwali, and a Satyanarayana Vratham after a good year or a major order. Vahana puja for a new delivery vehicle is also common, generally done at the kerb early in the morning.

- Abids is at its quietest before shops open; almost every puja here is scheduled early in the morning.
- Parking is extremely difficult on the main streets, so arrange a drop-off point and share the shop or building name clearly.
- Older commercial buildings often prohibit open flames; check with the owner or manager and plan a diya-only puja if a homam is not permitted.
- Smoke from a homam can carry into neighbouring shops, so use a small kund and keep the doors and windows set up sensibly.

What is the usual time for a shop opening puja in Abids?

Our building does not allow a homam. Is there an alternative?
Yes. A Ganapati and Lakshmi puja with kalasham and diyas can be performed without a fire. Mention the restriction when you enquire.
Can a Vahana puja be done for a new delivery vehicle?
Yes. It is short and usually done where the vehicle is parked. An early slot avoids blocking the street.
