About the area
Malakpet lies on the southern side of the Musi, known for its racecourse, its market streets and a station on the MMTS line. Older family houses, small apartment buildings and shops share the same lanes, and the neighbourhood runs into Dilsukhnagar and Chaderghat at either end.
The population is genuinely mixed. Telugu households live alongside Marwari, Gujarati, Marathi and other families who settled here generations ago, and many homes have been held by the same family since well before the city grew outwards.
Weddings and the rites around them are a steady part of Malakpet life. Families arrange the wedding itself, Nischitartham and related ceremonies at home or in a local function hall, and a Satyanarayana Vratham soon afterwards at the couple's house.
