Overview
What is Kuber Puja?
Kuber Puja is the worship of Lord Kubera, honoured in Hindu tradition as the treasurer of the devas, king of the yakshas and guardian of the northern direction. Families pray to him for the careful keeping and steady growth of their wealth.
It is most widely performed on Dhanteras, two days before Diwali, and many families worship Kubera alongside Goddess Lakshmi during Diwali. It is also performed when opening a new account book, a locker, a new office or at the start of a financial year. The vidhi usually includes Ganesh Pujan, installation of a Kuber yantra or image facing north, offerings and recitation of the Kubera mantra.
This puja is focused on Lord Kubera himself. Families who want a homam for Lakshmi and Kubera together can choose the Lakshmi Kubera Homam instead.

Significance
Tradition describes Kubera as the guardian of the treasures of the world, who holds wealth on behalf of the devas. His worship reminds devotees that wealth is something held in trust and to be used with care.
As the lord of the north, Kubera is also honoured in Vastu, and many households keep their safe or locker in the north in his name.

How the puja is performed

An altar is set in the north of the home or office with a Kuber yantra or image, a kalash, lamps and a small box or locker if the family wishes.

Ganesh Pujan and sankalp
The puja begins with Ganesh Pujan and a sankalp in the family's or business's name.

Kuber avahan and puja
Lord Kubera is invoked and offered flowers, sandalwood, akshat, coins and naivedya with the traditional upacharas.

Mantra japa
The Kubera mantra is recited, often 108 times, along with prayers to Goddess Lakshmi.

Blessing of account books
Where relevant, new account books, keys or the locker are blessed with kumkum and akshat.

The puja concludes with aarti and distribution of prasad.
