Overview
What is Aksharabhyasam (Vidyarambh)?
Aksharabhyasam, known in the North as Vidyarambh Sanskar, is the ceremony that marks the beginning of a child’s education. The child is seated on a parent’s lap and, guided by the Pandit, writes their first letters, often Om and the first letters of the alphabet, on a slate or in a plate of rice.
It is especially popular among Telugu families in Hyderabad, who often hold it at home or at Saraswati temples on auspicious days such as Vasant Panchami or Vijayadashami. The ceremony includes Ganesh Puja, Saraswati Puja and prayers for the child’s learning and focus.

Goddess Saraswati is worshipped with flowers, mantras and offerings, along with books, pens and a slate.

Seated on a parent’s lap, the child is guided to write Om and the first letters of the alphabet in rice or on a slate.

The Pandit and elders bless the child, the ceremony concludes with aarti, and prasad is shared.
