    Overview

    What is Tilak Ceremony (Phaldan)?

The Tilak ceremony is one of the most important pre wedding rituals in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and among many Hindi speaking families. The men of the bride's family, usually her brother and father, visit the groom's home and apply tilak on his forehead, accepting him into the family.

Along with the tilak, the bride's family offers shagun: fruits, sweets, dry fruits, clothes, a coconut and other gifts as per their custom. In some families this is called Phaldan, the offering of fruits, and in parts of Bihar Barachha. The groom's family welcomes them, and the ceremony is followed by a meal.

A Pandit performs the Ganesh Pujan, kalash sthapana and the sankalp, recites the mantras for the tilak, and guides both families through the exchange so that the customs of each side are respected.

    Significance of Tilak Ceremony (Phaldan)

    माङ्गल्यं तन्तुनानेन मम जीवनहेतुना।

    कण्ठे बध्नामि सुभगे त्वं जीव शरदां शतम्॥

    Traditional vivaha mantra

The tilak is a mark of respect and blessing. When the bride's family applies it to the groom, it signals that they accept him as their own and entrust their daughter to him.

The offering of fruits and shagun expresses the wish for a fruitful and happy married life for the couple.

If yours is not here, ask it. A real person answers every message on WhatsApp.

Where is the Tilak ceremony held?

Traditionally at the groom's home, where the bride's family visits. Many families now hold it in a banquet hall, and the Pandit can perform it there too.

Is Tilak the same as Roka?

No. Roka fixes the match between both families, while Tilak is a pre wedding ritual in which the bride's family applies tilak to the groom and offers shagun.

Can the Pandit from the Tilak also perform the wedding?

Yes, where available. Share both dates when you enquire and we will confirm the same Pandit if possible.
