Overview
What is Venkateswara Puja?
Venkateswara Puja is the worship of Lord Venkateswara, also known as Srinivasa and Balaji, the form of Lord Vishnu who resides on the Tirumala hills. For many Telugu, Tamil and Kannada families he is the kula devata, and a home puja in his name marks weddings, housewarmings, birthdays and the fulfilment of vows.
The vidhi usually includes Ganesh Pujan, invocation of the Lord, abhishekam where the family wishes, alankaram, archana with his names such as the Venkateswara Ashtottaram or Sahasranamam, and naivedya followed by harati. Many families also keep a vow to visit Tirumala and begin it with a puja at home.

Significance
Tradition holds that Lord Vishnu came to the Venkata hill in the Kali Yuga to be close to his devotees, and that he married Padmavati there. He is honoured as the Lord who answers the prayers of those who surrender to him.
Saturdays and the month of Purattasi (Bhadrapada and Ashwin) are especially associated with him, and many families fast or offer special naivedya on these days.

Preparation
An altar is set with an image of Lord Venkateswara, often with Sridevi and Bhudevi, a kalash, lamps and tulsi.

Ganesh Pujan and sankalpam
The puja begins with Ganesh Pujan and a sankalpam in the family's name, gotra and nakshatra.

Abhishekam and alankaram
Where the family wishes, abhishekam is performed, followed by alankaram with flowers, tulsi and ornaments.

Archana
Archana is performed with the Venkateswara Ashtottaram or Sahasranamam and tulsi leaves.

Naivedyam such as laddu, pongal or other sweets is offered, followed by harati and teertham for the family.
