Overview
Vat Savitri Vrat is kept by married women in memory of Savitri, whose devotion and wisdom won back the life of her husband Satyavan from Yamaraj. The worship takes place beneath a banyan tree, which is revered for its long life and is associated with the Trimurti.
In North India the vrat falls on Jyeshtha Amavasya, while in Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of the South it is observed on Jyeshtha Purnima as Vat Purnima. Women offer water, flowers and fruits to the tree, wind raw cotton thread around its trunk while circling it, and listen to the Savitri Satyavan katha.
A Pandit can lead the puja and katha at a temple or a banyan tree near you, or guide the vrat at home with a branch of the tree where no tree is nearby.

Savitri is revered as an ideal of courage and devotion. Her story from the Mahabharata is recited on this day and is central to the vrat.
The banyan tree, with its long life and spreading roots, is associated in tradition with Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and its worship is linked with longevity and stability of the family.

Water, roli, akshat, flowers, fruits and soaked black gram are offered at the roots of the banyan tree, and images of Savitri and Satyavan are worshipped.
Women circle the tree seven or more times, winding raw cotton thread around the trunk.
The Pandit recites the Savitri Satyavan katha, followed by aarti and blessings.
