Overview

What is Mangala Gauri Vratham?

Mangala Gauri Vratham is observed on the Tuesdays of the month of Shravan. It is traditionally kept by newly married women, often for the first five years after marriage, in worship of Goddess Gauri as the giver of auspiciousness and a long married life.

In Telugu homes the first vratham is often performed at the bride's parental home, with the Goddess worshipped in a turmeric image or idol, sixteen kinds of offerings, and the vratha katha. In Maharashtra, the Mangalagaur celebration also includes night long songs and games among women.

A Pandit guides the sankalpam, the puja and the katha, and helps the family with the offerings and the udyapana when the years of the vow are complete.

Significance

Gauri, the form of Parvati, is worshipped as the embodiment of auspiciousness and devotion within marriage.

The vratha katha tells of a devoted wife whose worship of Mangala Gauri protected her husband's life, and the vrat is kept in the same spirit of faith.

How the puja is performed

Ganapati puja and sankalpam
The puja begins with the worship of Ganapati and the sankalpam in the name of the vrati.

Gauri avahana
Goddess Gauri is invoked in a turmeric image or idol, decorated with flowers and shringar.

Shodashopachara and offerings
The Goddess is worshipped with sixteen offerings, often including sixteen kinds of leaves, flowers and sweets.

Katha and harathi
The Mangala Gauri vratha katha is recited, followed by harathi and the offering of vayanam to elder women.
