Overview
Nischitartham is the Telugu engagement ceremony at which the two families formally confirm the marriage. Known in the North as Sagai and in Tamil homes as Nichayathartham, it usually includes Ganesh Puja, the exchange of betel leaves, fruits, clothes and rings, and the reading of the lagna patrika, which announces the wedding muhurat.
In Hyderabad, Nischitartham is commonly held at the bride’s home, a function hall or a temple, with both families and close relatives present. The Pandit leads the ritual part, conducts the puja and reads out the details of the wedding to the gathering.

Māṅgalyaṁ tantunānena mama jīvanahetunā, kaṇṭhe badhnāmi subhage tvaṁ jīva śaradāṁ śatam.
The engagement is the formal promise between two families, made before the deities and elders. Traditionally it is the moment when the match is publicly confirmed and the wedding date is set.
The exchange of tambulam, clothes and rings is a mark of mutual respect and acceptance, and the reading of the lagna patrika invites blessings for the wedding to come.
