Overview
What is Subramanya Puja?
Subramanya Puja is the worship of Lord Subramanya, the son of Shiva and Parvati and the commander of the divine army. He is known across India by many names: Kartikeya in the North, Murugan in Tamil Nadu, Subrahmanya Swamy in Andhra, Telangana and Karnataka, and Skanda in the Puranas.
Shashti, the sixth day of the lunar fortnight, is dedicated to him, and Skanda Shashti and Subramanya Shashti are among the most important days for his worship. In the South, many families also worship him in the form of a serpent, and turn to him when advised to pacify naga related doshas.
The vidhi usually includes Ganesh Pujan, invocation of the Lord with his vel (spear), abhishekam, archana with his names and naivedya. Many Telugu and Tamil families in Hyderabad keep Subramanya as their family deity.

Vakratuṇḍa mahākāya sūryakoṭi samaprabha, nirvighnaṁ kuru me deva sarvakāryeṣu sarvadā.
Significance
The Puranas describe Skanda being born to defeat the demon Tarakasura, whom no one else could overcome. He is therefore honoured as the protector of the devas and as the embodiment of courage and wisdom.
In Tamil tradition, he is also the teacher who explained the meaning of Om to his father Shiva, and his six abodes, the Arupadai Veedu, are major places of pilgrimage.

Preparation
An altar is set with an image of Lord Subramanya, often with Valli and Devasena, a vel, a kalash and lamps.

Ganesh Pujan and sankalpam
The puja begins with Ganesh Pujan and a sankalpam in the family's name, gotra and nakshatra.

Abhishekam
Abhishekam is performed with milk, curd, honey, panchamritam and water, as per the family's custom.

Alankaram and archana
The Lord is decorated with flowers and sandalwood, and archana is performed with the Subramanya Ashtottaram.

Stotras such as the Subramanya Bhujangam or Skanda Shashti Kavacham are recited according to tradition.

Naivedyam is offered, followed by harati and prasadam for the family.
