Overview
What is Hayagriva Puja?
Hayagriva Puja is the worship of Lord Hayagriva, the form of Lord Vishnu with the head of a horse, honoured as the lord of knowledge and learning. He is especially revered in the Sri Vaishnava and Madhva traditions of South India, often together with Goddess Lakshmi as Lakshmi Hayagriva.
Families perform this puja for children and students at the start of an academic year, before examinations or before a new course of study. The vidhi usually includes Ganesh Pujan, invocation of the Lord, offerings with cardamom and white flowers, recitation of the Hayagriva Stotram of Vedanta Desika and naivedya, followed by harati.
Hayagriva Jayanti is observed on Shravana Purnima, the same day as Upakarma, and is an especially popular day for this puja in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada families.

Significance
The Puranas describe how Vishnu took the form of Hayagriva to recover the Vedas, which had been stolen by demons, and returned them to Brahma. He is therefore honoured as the protector and giver of knowledge.

An altar is set with an image of Lord Hayagriva or Lakshmi Hayagriva, a kalash, lamps and the student's books and pens.

Ganesh Pujan and sankalpam
The puja begins with Ganesh Pujan and a sankalpam in the name of the student and family.

Archana
The Lord is offered white flowers, tulsi and cardamom, and archana is performed with his names.

Stotra path
The Hayagriva Stotram of Vedanta Desika is recited, and the student may be guided to repeat a few verses.

Blessing of books
Books and pens are blessed so the student can begin study with the Lord's grace.

Naivedyam such as a sweet made of chana dal and jaggery is offered, followed by harati.
