Overview
What is Gangaur Puja?
Gangaur is one of the most loved festivals of Rajasthan and of Marwari families wherever they live, from Delhi and Gurgaon to Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore. The name joins Gan, a name of Lord Shiva, and Gaur, Goddess Gauri or Parvati, whose devotion and married life are celebrated over the festival.
The worship begins the day after Holi and continues for about sixteen to eighteen days. Women and girls make or bring clay or wooden images of Isar and Gangaur, worship them each morning with water, flowers and durva, and sing traditional Gangaur songs. The festival concludes on Chaitra Shukla Tritiya with the main puja and a farewell to Gauri.
A Pandit can perform the main Gangaur puja, take the sankalp, recite the katha and guide women observing the vrat for the first time, especially new brides celebrating their first Gangaur after marriage, which many families mark with special care.

Gangaur Puja Procedure
How the puja is performed, step by step.

Setting up Isar and Gangaur
Images of Isar (Shiva) and Gangaur (Gauri) are placed on a decorated chowki, often with a kalash and wheat sprouts grown during the festival.

Sankalp
The Pandit takes the sankalp for the women keeping the vrat, with their names and the purpose of the puja.

Gauri pujan and shringar
Gauri is offered water, roli, mehndi, kajal, bangles, a chunari and other items of shringar, with flowers and durva.

Offering of gune and sweets
Traditional sweets such as gune or ghewar and fruits are offered, and many families offer sixteen of each item.

Katha, songs and aarti
The Gangaur katha is narrated, the women sing Gangaur songs, and the puja ends with aarti and prasad.
