Overview
What is Holika Dahan Puja?
Holika Dahan is lit on the evening of Phalguna Purnima, the night before the colours of Holi. It remembers the story of Prahlad, the young devotee of Lord Vishnu, who was saved from the fire while Holika, who tried to harm him, was burned. The bonfire stands for the victory of devotion and goodness.
Families and neighbourhoods build the Holika from wood and cow dung cakes, tie raw cotton thread around it, and gather at the muhurat to worship it before it is lit. Wheat or barley ears, coconut and grains are roasted in the fire and shared as prasad.
A Pandit performs the puja at the correct muhurat, avoiding the Bhadra period, takes the sankalp for the families present, and guides the parikrama and offerings so that the custom is followed properly. Housing societies often invite a Pandit so that everyone can take part together.
Significance of Holika Dahan Puja
वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥
The story of Prahlad is a reminder that faith in the divine protects the devotee. Lighting the Holika symbolises burning away negativity before the joy of Holi.
Roasting the new harvest in the fire also marks the turn of the season and gratitude for the crops.
