Overview
What is Ganesh Chaturthi Sthapana (Ganpati Sthapana)?
Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the god of beginnings. On Bhadrapad Shukla Chaturthi, families across Maharashtra, Hyderabad, Bangalore and North India bring home a clay murti of Ganpati and install it with a formal sthapana, inviting Bappa to stay as an honoured guest.
The sthapana includes avahan (invitation), pran pratishtha (invoking the presence of the deity into the murti), and a shodashopachar puja of sixteen offerings, followed by aarti and naivedya of modak or laddoo. Durva grass, red flowers and shami leaves are offered, as Ganesha is traditionally said to love them.
Families keep Ganpati for one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days, as per their custom, with daily aarti morning and evening. A Pandit performs the sthapana on the chosen muhurat and can return for the uttar puja before visarjan, so that Bappa is bid farewell with the proper vidhi.

Lord Ganesha is worshipped first in every Hindu ritual. Inviting him home on his own festival is seen as welcoming wisdom, auspicious beginnings and the clearing of obstacles into the household for the year ahead.
Pran pratishtha turns a clay murti into a living presence for the days of the festival. That is why the sthapana is done with care on a muhurat, and why the murti is later given a respectful visarjan in water after the uttar puja.

How the puja is performed, step by step.

Preparing the mandap
A clean chowki is set up with a red or yellow cloth, a kalash with mango leaves and coconut, and decorations of flowers and lights where the murti will be placed.

Sankalp and Ganesh avahan
The Pandit takes the sankalp with the family's names and gotra and invites Lord Ganesha with mantras to be present in the murti.

Pran pratishtha
With Vedic mantras, the Pandit performs pran pratishtha, invoking the presence of the deity into the clay murti. Many families cover the murti's eyes until this step.

Shodashopachar puja
Sixteen offerings are made, including water, panchamrit, clothes, janeu, sandalwood, red flowers, durva grass, incense, diya and naivedya of modak.

Aarti and prasad
The family sings Ganpati aarti such as Sukhkarta Dukhharta or Jai Ganesh Deva, and modak or laddoo prasad is shared.

Uttar puja before visarjan
On the last day the Pandit performs the uttar puja, thanking Bappa and requesting him to return next year, before the murti is taken for visarjan.
