    Overview

    What is Chitragupta Puja?

Lord Chitragupta is revered as the divine record keeper who notes the good and bad deeds of every being. His puja is observed with great devotion by Kayastha families across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, and by many others who see him as the patron of writing, accounts and learning.

The main day is Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the day of Bhai Dooj, two days after Diwali. Families place pens, inkpots, account books and today often laptops before the deity. A special custom is to write the family's income and expenses, or the name of Lord Ram, on a fresh sheet of paper and offer it to Chitragupta ji.

After the puja, pens and books are traditionally not used until the next morning. A Pandit performs the sankalp, the Chitragupta katha and the aarti, and explains the meaning of each custom in simple Hindi so that the children in the family can follow.

    Significance of Chitragupta Puja

    वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ।

    निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥

    Traditional Ganesha prayer

Chitragupta ji is associated with justice, honesty and careful accounting. Worshipping him is a reminder to keep one's deeds and dealings truthful through the year.

Because he is the patron of the pen, the puja is especially meaningful for students, writers, accountants, lawyers and anyone whose work depends on records and learning.
